Does Social Media Help SEO?

If your business posts on social media weekly, you've probably wondered whether it helps your Google rankings.

As an SEO company, our new clients are typically curious as to why social media is a part of our monthly content package. While social media and SEO are two different channels with different rules, they overlap in ways that help your business with visibility.

For businesses deciding where to put their time and budget, understanding how the two connect helps you set realistic expectations (and avoid chasing the wrong numbers).

This article breaks down what we know about the relationship between social media and rankings, the indirect ways social media supports SEO, how to make your social efforts work harder for your website, and how Social Media Management (SMM) can take your social media to the next level.

Does Social Media Directly Affect Rankings?

Google has said that likes, shares, and followers aren't ranking factors, meaning a post with a high like count won't automatically push a page up in search results. On top of that, most links shared on social platforms are "no follow," so they typically don't pass the same link value as a link from another website.

When running marketing reports, we see social posts and platforms in search all the time (often on pages 1- 2). Although not a direct ranking factor, it does have an effect on your online visibility.

Here's where social media earns its place.

How Social Media Supports SEO

  • More people see your content: Sharing blogs, infographics, articles, and updates puts your website in front of people who otherwise wouldn’t have found it through search.
  • More space in search results: Social profiles and posts can appear in search results right alongside your website.
  • Brand recognition leads to branded searches: When people see your business on social media again and again, they're more likely to look you up later.
  • More chances to earn links and mentions: Helpful, easy-to-share content gives other people a reason to reference it, which can lead to mentions and links from other websites.
  • Fresh ideas for your website: The questions people ask in your comments and messages can point to future content topics.
  • Support for local credibility: Active, complete profiles back up the information on your Google Business Profile and website.

When Social Media Becomes a Search Engine

Search isn't limited to Google anymore. People search businesses, how-to videos, and recommendations on platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. Almost half of Gen Z has turned to social-first search, rather than turning to search engines.

Treating your social profiles like searchable assets looks like using clear business names, descriptive bios, and captions that use language your customers search for.

What Social Media Won't Do

Social media management can support your SEO, but it can't replace the fundamentals:

  • It won't fix a website that doesn't answer customers' questions. On-site content is still the foundation of SEO.
  • It won't make up for an incomplete Google Business Profile or inconsistent business information.
  • It won't turn likes into rankings.
  • Posting just to post doesn't help. Be mindful of your content!
  • How to Make Your Social Media Work Harder for Your SEO
  • Keep your branding consistent: Use the same business name, logo, and (when possible) handle across platforms.
  • Use keywords naturally: Work the terms your customers search into bios, captions, and video descriptions naturally, without keyword stuffing.
  • Link back to your website: Add your URL to every profile. Share new blogs, pages, and articles once they go live.
  • Add alt text and captions: Alt text isn’t for keyword stuffing. It makes your content more accessible and gives search engines context about your images and videos.
  • Show up consistently: An account that goes quiet for months can leave customers wondering if you're still open.
  • Respond to comments, messages, and reviews: It shows real people are behind the business.

What This Means for Your Business

Customers often check a business's social profiles and reviews before visiting a website or picking up the phone. When your profiles, Google Business Profile, and website share the same message, it's easier for customers (and search engines) to understand who you are and where you operate.

Businesses that treat Social Media Management and SEO as one connected effort tend to see the most results. Your website acts as the gold standard for content and SEO, helping people find your business online, and social media platforms provide them more ways to discover, learn, and trust you.
